GEORGIA O’KEEFFE: THE BRIGHTNESS OF LIGHT
Art connoisseurs might know Georgia O’Keeffe from the modernist paintings that put her on the map: Colorful canvases dominated by wispy patterns, earthy flowers, and other ethereal ingredients.
But O’Keeffe’s impact on American culture and creativity extends well beyond that and encompasses a large swath of the 20th century. Paul Wagner’s absorbing documentary Georgia O’Keeffe: The Brightness of Light covers all 98 years of O’Keeffe’s life and legacy, with a decade-spanning approach that ground itself in the present. From the early stirrings of her artistry in the Midwest and later successes in the New York art scene, all the way through her later years in New Mexico – when she became an unwitting centerpiece of the Women’s Liberation Movement – Georgia O’Keeffe: The Brightness of Light is both comprehensive and powerful in its evocation of the artist’s unique journey.
Voiced by Claire Danes (with additional narration by Hugh Dancy), O’Keeffe comes to life in the documentary as a fiercely independent and at times solitary figure who broke down artistic barriers on her canvas and beyond. Far from being seen “from a distance at an exhibition,” as one former colleague puts it, Wagner’s poignant movie introduces a fresh emotional context for appreciating O’Keeffe’s work.
