MILLION DOLLAR LEGS
The zaniest comedic delight of 1932 is this underappreciated gem, which was originally written by Joseph Mankiewiecz as a starring vehicle for the Marx brothers. (Instead, they delivered their classic college comedy Horse Feathers, also in this series.)
A live-action cartoon set in the fictional country of Klopstokia, Million Dollar Legs finds its oddball president (W.C. Fields in one of his earliest sound films) coping with bankruptcy. At the behest of a traveling salesman (Jack Oakie) intent on marrying the politician’s daughter (Susan Fleming), Klopstokia enters the 1932 Olympics with its eye on a cash prize (the premise was inspired by the real 1932 Olympics, taking place in Los Angeles that year).
Comedic mayhem ensues, from internal sabotage efforts by the president’s cabinet to relentless sight gags. Decades before the Zucker brothers turned the parody film into a blockbuster with Airplane!, this outrageous undertaking was one of the most liberated comedic achievements of its time, and its relentless charm has remained intact nearly a century down the line.ComedyPT1H4MNR2026-03-25Jack Oakie
