ONE HOUR WITH YOU

Co-Presented With the Southampton History Museum Our Spirit of 1932 series returns to celebrate films from the year our theater first opened its doors. The latest edition turns to the joy of musicals from the era that bring its jubilance to life. Join us on opening night ahead of our first screening with a special presentation from the Southampton History Museum, as Sarah Kautz and Mary Cummings take us back in time to explore what our community was like in the year when these movies hit theaters. Their conversation will be followed by a presentation of the delightful 1932 hit One Hour With You. Legendary comedy director Ernst Lubitsch delivered two masterworks in 1932: The jewel thief romance Trouble in Paradise (which opened our series last year) and this bawdy musical comedy. Remaking his silent film The Marriage Circle, Lubitsch paired French charmer Maurice Chevalier with Jeanette MacDonald (who also starred together in Love Me Tonight, released the same year) in a brilliant, playful relationship comedy loaded with endearing tunes. Chevalier plays a good-natured doctor faithful to his wife at all costs – at least until a seductive patient (Genevieve Tobin) shows up and tests his resolve. Loaded with winking innuendo, playful rhyming dialogue, and wall-to-wall charm, One Hour With You is one of the most celebratory examples of “The Lubitsch Touch,” the director’s well-known ability to deliver one-of-a-kind entertainment. Its title song was one of the top hits of 1932, ubiquitous enough to be parodied in another film from this series, Million Dollar Legs.ComedyPT1H20MNR1932-03-18
