THE THIRD MAN IN 35MM
Orson Welles’ mysterious turn as the elusive agent Harry Lime is one of the many pleasures in this unique wintry noir from the great British director Carol Reed. Set in a shadowy vision of Vienna in the immediate aftermath of WWII, the movie finds pulp writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton, a decade after appearing alongside Welles in Citizen Kane) adrift in the city after Harry, his old childhood friend, turns up dead. Or does he? Set to an entrancing zither score that establishes an ironic tone throughout, The Third Man finds Holly wandering through a labyrinthine of clues on his quest to get to the bottom of Harry’s disappearance. Though not explicitly about the holidays, this suspenseful tale captures the quest for closure that haunts us all at the end of the year.
With a taut and intelligent script by novelist Graham Greene, the movie builds to an iconic showdown in the city’s sewers that remains just as gripping decades down the line. The Playhouse is thrilled to join forces with Rialto Pictures to present The Third Man on 35mm as it was originally shown. Screening as part of our series Holidays on Hill Street and cross-listed with The Scorsese Family Experience, featuring films selected by Martin Scorsese and his daughter Francesca.ThrillerPT1H45MNR2025-12-05Joseph Cotten
