Join the Southampton Playhouse to celebrate the awe and wonder of the cosmos on the big screen. For decades, humanity has embraced the ambition of space exploration, and movies have played a pivotal role in celebrating the spirit of venturing into the unknown, no matter the risks. Thirty years ago, Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 saluted the perilous journey of a few brave astronauts whose survival instincts helped bring them back home.

To commemorate that anniversary, Apollo 13 launches onto our IMAX screen, and it won’t be alone. Additional screenings will include the staggering new IMAX documentary Deep Sky, which salutes the spectacular achievements of the James Webb Space Telescope.
This screening is in conjunction with Hamptons Observatory

After the screening, Hamptons Observatory will set up a telescope in the parking lot with a solar filter to look at the sun in close-up detail.

Hamptons Observatory will return to the Playhouse for a night sky viewing session in our parking lot on September 22, before a 7:30 PM screening of Contact. The acclaimed 1997 film adaptation of Carl Sagan's book -- which turns 40 this year -- will be followed by a conversation with author and journalist Becky Ferreira, science reporter at 404 Media, who will sign copies of her latest book on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, First Contact.

No matter how much you crank up the volume, it’s hard to recreate a major musical performance in most movie theaters. But most movie theaters don’t have an IMAX screen. Following up on our hit showings of Becoming Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii earlier this year, PLAYHOUSE ROCK is our inaugural summer series celebrating an array of the greatest rock concert movies ever made.

Dance in the aisles, sing along, or simply gaze at the artistry towering over you: These are the joys of watching first-rate music documentaries under the best cinematic circumstances possible.

Stay tuned for more information about special guests, musical additions, and more as the summer culminates at the Playhouse with an explosive array of historic performances and pop star personalities resurrected on a grand scale.
